The ICCA is the proud sponsor of The OUP & The ICCA Moot which is one of the most prestigious and popular mooting competitions in the UK, offering undergraduate law and GDL students the opportunity to practise and perfect their advocacy skills.
In 2022, the moot was won by Newcastle University and presided over by The Rt. Hon. Lady Justice Andrews.
Everything you need to know about the competition can be found on the OUP website. You will find information about mooting, how to participate and details of the moot itself. You will also find a conversation between Clare Weaver from OUP and Chris Kessling, Vice-Dean of the ICCA who discuss the origins of the partnership, the importance of advocacy and the role the competition plays introducing aspiring students to a career at the Bar.
The 2022/23 competition has begun, and the final will take place on Monday 12 June.
Mooting can enhance students’ understanding of the law, as well as their analytical and advocacy skills. Although it can be nerve-wracking, mooting is intellectually rewarding and can be used to demonstrate a keen interest in advocacy on a CV. Experienced criminal barrister, Nathan Rasiah, and the 2017 OUP National Mooting Competition winner, Conor Lockhart, explain the importance of getting involved in mooting.
Baroness Hallett and Conor Lockhart have kindly put together some tips for those of you currently taking part in the competition:
